Databases and Geodatabases
Microsoft Access was used as the starting point for understanding how to enforce data integrity to ensure data could be properly stored and queried. With this knowledge, it was then possible to develop skills within Microsoft SQL Server 2008 for the purpose of manipulating and querying data. This all took place during a four-month long course. Then, a three-month long course was taken which was dedicated to Geodatabases. This course allowed me to develop my skills applying database concepts within a GIS environment, such as by creating a fully functional Geodatabase with appropriate domains and subtypes.
Database Creation
Throughout the course of completing this deliverable, I obtained winery information from the internet, input the information into a database which I designed and created thus gaining a basic familiarity with Microsoft Access and basic table designs. The last part of this deliverable helped me to better understand some advanced characteristics of tables and their relationships.
Database Use and Application
Throughout the course of completing this deliverable, I had to utilize queries multiple times in order to retrieve information. The information that was retrieved was used to create basic forms and reports, which allowed me to gain practical experience building user friendly methods of inputting and outputting data stored in a database. This deliverable further allowed me to better understand how to utilize basic form level controls and user controls for easy navigation of records. Although this database contains no built-in security for marking purposes, I was able to explore the possibilities for database security and ultimately create a user-friendly application for this deliverable.
Database T-SQL
Throughout the course of completing this deliverable, I learned how to convert data from an excel spreadsheet to a format usable in Microsoft SQL Server. With this, I utilized appropriate database techniques to build the database and then populate it. The second part of this deliverable allowed me to gain experience creating queries for information retrieval at at various levels of difficulty and complexity.
Geodatabase Design
This deliverable involved completing standardized geodatabase design forms. By
diagramming and thinking through geodatabase design, I gained practical
experience enforcing data integrity rules to ensure proper behavior and
accuracy of a geodatabase.
